Julia
Director and Behaviour Consultant
“I first adopted a greyhound 21 years ago! His name was Spartan and I fell in love with the breed, and it opened my eyes up to the poor treatment, and massive overbreeding of greyhounds in Victoria.
He was timid and shut down and I watched him blossom in our home. I caught the greyhound bug and have had them ever since. ”
What inspired you to get involved with greyhound rescue and adoption?
Once I learnt the reality of racing in Victoria, I became a fierce advocate for the rights of greyhounds and wanted to volunteer for an ethical non industry funded group. The GG team welcomed me with open arms and I've never looked back and have been here for around 8 years..
What’s your role at Gumtree Greys?
I am the Chair of the Board of Directors and undertaker many of the governance tasks at Gumtree Greys, ensuring the charity is run professionally and responsibly. I am also the Behaviour Co-ordinator. I run Carlton Farmers market staff every 1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month. And like all the team at Gumtree Greys I will do any task that needs to be done!
What do you find most rewarding about helping greyhounds find their forever homes?
I became really fascinated by why dogs choose to do what they do, when helping these beautiful dogs adjust to pet life. I became enthralled by science of behaviour and obtained multiple qualifications in the field, ultimately becoming certified by my peers as a behaviour consultant. I love helping these dogs and their people live harmoniously and joyfully together.
