Brian
Adoption Coordinator
“My first interaction with a greyhound was meeting a friend’s boy Johnny at dinner. I was astounded how friendly and engaging he was. We had a good hour cuddling and I was smitten. I adopted my very first greyhound about four months later. I couldn’t believe my luck at having such a beautiful girl, Violet join my home. ”
What inspired you to get involved with greyhound rescue and adoption?
I knew my first Girl Violet had spent time in a foster home and wanted to show my appreciation by fostering a greyhound. We have been continuously fostering for the last 15 years including three foster fails Rose, Glory and my current boy Toby.
Having first fostered for the racing industry’s rehoming unit, I learnt about the cruelty and exploitation of the industry and could not in all conscience continue with them. I found Gumtree Greys about nine years ago and felt liberated in joining an inclusive and supportive community that will do anything that is necessary to support the welfare of greyhounds.
What’s your role at Gumtree Greys?
As Gumtree Greys has grown our roles have evolved and specialised. For the last few years I have managed the adoptions. This includes responding to adoption enquiries, interviewing prospective adopters, arranging meets-and-greets, formalising adoptions as well as guiding adopting families through the first few months of adoption. It is a delight to get updates and see so many of our adopted hounds come to our farmers markets and special events. A Gumtree Grey will be supported and cherished for their entire life.
What do you find most rewarding about helping greyhounds find their forever homes?
Adopting through Gumtree Greys means you become part of a inclusive and generous community. As well as matching wonderful hounds with the best homes, I am proud to welcome new adopters to our community. Many of my most cherished friends are part of our Gumtree Greys Community.
